Misplaced Values

I was sickened last night by the news media, and sickened again this morning.

How much airtime was given over by the BBC to that freakshow of a memorial to a faded pop star (and alleged paedophile) compared with the airtime given to the unveiling of the memorial to the 52 innocent victims of the 7/7 London bombings?

How many column inches did said freakshow take up this morning compared similarly with the 7/7 memorial?

For the sake of whoever's in charge around here, people! Someone has shown a shed-load of bad taste with the timing there. If MJ died at the end end of August, would they hold such a mawkish and macabre ceremony on September 11?

We need to keep things in perspective here, please!

As always, you must blame the public not the media. The media give the people what they want because of their requirement to make profit. If you are sickened, it's because of humanity at large, not because of the people who give them what they want.

Jackson was American - 7th July isn't significant to Americans.

  True; but the BBC isn't American, the BBC isn't funded by Americans and Americans aren't sent to jail because they can't afford the licence fee...yet for over a week now the freak show that is Michael Jackson has received blanket coverage on many BBC channels.

      No; you seem to be blaming the public whereas I'm criticising the BBC...the public gets what it's given by the BBC - there's no element of choice in it.
      
      How on earth can I protest about BBC programmes? I'm forced to pay the licence fee if I want to watch ANY TV programmes, not just the BBC.
      
      If the BBC was funded by subscription, I could [and would]choose not to subscribe.

        The BBC cares very much about it's viewing and listening figures.
        
        The fault remains with the public for wanting this, not with the suppliers for giving them what they want. This was a car crash and people love watching car crashes.

MJ's memorial was a worldwide event. The 7/7 memorial was a British event. I'm not saying it wasn't more important, but worldwide events get more airtime and inches than national events, simple as that.

I can understand the American channels covering MJ's memorial service fully but I can't understand the BBC covering it in such depth...we pay licence fees for the BBC to provide entertainment at all levels, news in general, and politics and business news, the latest scientific advances, and progs on the Natural world predominantly...not I would have thought the massive coverage given to a dead pop star adequately covered by at least six or seven other channels...our day should have been one of remembrance of the lives lost on the 7th July instead the BBC chose to focus on MJ...hmmm...I agree, NotBob, priorities are askew...GBHs...XXX

it was not just the BBC. It was everywhere last night, and believe me, we have a lot of channels to choose from. I did not watch it though, managed to find a nice documentary instead.

I inadvertently sparked off a row between two people last night when I stated my opinion that it was disgusting that MJ's memorial was shown in full on several channels, whereas the 7/7 memorial got about two minutes (if that) on the news.

I think the BBC would definitely have better served the public by giving that service priority. The MJ thing was on several other free channels.

As for the date, it's not a relevant date for Americans, so why would they choose to avoid it?

They have a tele at a coffee cafe inside one of the local super-duper supermarkets, and as I walked past, CNN was broadcasting "breaking news" about the memorial service....the bloke's been dead for days, how can it be "breaking" news???

So many other, much more decent and just as talented celebrities have passed on, in the last week or so, and barely a passing mumble about them...personally, I think Mollie Sugden was a hundred times nicer and more talented than Jackson ever was.
